Industrial chic meets hidden retreat in this three-storey bungalow.

With its glass fibre-reinforced stone panels, the façade of this Bangsar bungalow is vaguely reminiscent of the stone walls of a medieval castle. However, its white and grey exterior hides a warm and spacious interior, with a lush terrace garden, swimming pool, and additional rooms such as a dance studio and basement.
Using tasteful details – such as a spiral staircase on the patio and a feature wall in the living room covered with rustic metal plates –the home’s industrial theme is accentuated and consistent but never overpowering. At the same time, local artist Ajim Juxtra’s work lends the home a contemporary appeal.
Instead of using a conventional open plan, Ong & Ong Design created interior spaces that are strategically configured to reflect the different functions of each space. The dining and living areas embrace the poolside in an L-shape, creating a sense of openness while providing privacy. The beautifully-proportioned open kitchen with its island station is useful for simple meals, while the dining table positioned next to the living area makes it easy to open up the entire space for entertaining.
Upstairs, the bedrooms overlook the inviting pool and greenery. Each bedroom is designed to fit the characteristics of its primary occupants, with a sophisticated palette for adults and sweet pastels for the young daughter.
Outside, the garden, which begins at the front of the house and continues on to the backyard, softens the industrial feel of the home. The walkway leading to the pool is lined with trellises for creepers, sturdy palms and lush, leafy shrubs kept in check by well-placed pots, pebbles and stone pathways.
Throughout the three-story home, the generous use of glass panels keeps the interior spaces naturally lit and ventilated while the greenery and ample outdoor spaces such as the veranda and swimming pool deck make it easy to open up the home to the outdoors, bringing in fresh air and ensuring good ventilation.
